A Superfood Snack

Nuts have so many health benefits and are an important part of a healthy diet. The problem with store-bought nuts is they are often roasted in Omega-6 oils such as canola oil (not the good Omega-3 oils we want to be consuming each day), have added sugar, and are often heavily salted.

  • Almonds are high in fiber and protein, making them the perfect filling snack. They are high in antioxidants and vitamin E, help keep blood sugar stable, are high in magnesium, support healthy cholesterol levels, and have been found to decrease the risk of developing heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer. (reference)

  • Brazil nuts are unique with their high levels of selenium, which help support your mood, thyroid, and cellular function. You don’t want to grab a handful of these nuts for a snack, however, as a serving size is just 2-3 nuts. They are also high in copper, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E, which support heart health and decrease inflammation. (reference)

  • Cashews are high in fiber and protein and rich in healthy fats that support heart and brain health and help keep blood sugar levels stable. They are also high in copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and phosphorus. (reference)

  • Pecans are a great source of healthy fats, calcium, magnesium and potassium. They help support a healthy blood pressure and help keep your cholesterol levels in check, decreasing your risk of heart attacks and stroke.

  • Walnuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids, iron, potassium, and magnesium. They help lower LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol), decrease inflammation, and may help reduce the risk of some cancers.

By making your own, you have full control of the ingredients so you don’t get any unwanted ingredients, fillers, and preservatives.

This recipe is extremely versatile, so you’ll never get tired of the same blend! Make this recipe using whatever ingredients you have on hand, or make it a point to add in something new that you’ve never tried before.
